Gulf South Electric and Solar will supply and install a
complete solar system. We will evaluate the feasibility of installing a solar
system on your building/home
by: measuring the roof location to be used,
documenting solar irradiation with a solar pathfinder and by using the degree of
roof slope to verify intensity of sunlight
365 days a year.
This is a grid tie system that will feed electricity back to
the grid (feed electricity back to the power company). The system will cause the
electric meter to spin
backward when it is producing more power than required to
operate the home. GSES will supply an energy and cost savings evaluation,
designed specifically for
a customized system at your location, taking into
account; roof tilt and shading analysis. You will receive the estimated annual
savings on electric bill.
We are a State licensed, insured and certified solar
installer. For home owners to receive the 50% State rebate and 30% Federal tax
credit, it is mandatory that
the installer be certified.
We offer a turn-key energy savings plan which includes, custom
solar system, blow-in attic insulation, programmable thermostats and hot water
heater time clocks
for a more complete energy efficient home.
Call Gulf South Electric and Solar for your customized
quote.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS |
- What is Solar Power?
Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity.
- How does a solar electric system work?
A photovoltaic cell which is commonly known as a solar panel produces DC
power from sunlight. The DC power is run to an inverter, which changes the
DC voltage to AC voltage. The AC voltage is what is used by your home.
During the day, if your solar system
produces more electricity than your home is using, your utility may allow
net metering or the crediting of your utility account for the excess power
generated being returned to the grid. Your utility would provide power as
usual at night and during the day when your electricity demand exceeds that
produced by your solar system. This is called a grid-tied system.
-
What is a residential solar electric system?
We
offer comprehensive, code-compliant systems that allow you to generate your
own electricity at home. Designed to interconnect with your existing utility
service, they feature solar modules, power electronics and patented mounting
kits. We provide system installation and service.
-
Will my system work at night?
No. Sunlight must be present for your solar
modules to produce power. At night, you draw power from your utility.
-
Will my system work on cloudy days?
Yes, though they produce less
electricity. Under a light overcast sky, panels might produce about half as
much as under full sun.
-
How long do solar
panels last?
With no moving parts and made of very
inert materials, our solar modules are tough. Manufacturers tell us
that the panels will last over 25 to 30 years.
-
Where is the best
place to mount my solar system?
A
south-facing roof area is optimal, but solar electric panels can be mounted
on west or east facing roofs and still produce better than 90 percent of the
power of a true south roof mounting. Panels can also be mounted on free
standing racks, on out buildings or built as a pergola or gazebo roof.
- What happens during a power outage?
With a grid-tied system you lose power during a power
outage. With a battery backup system you retain power to critical loads.
With a backup generator system you will maintain power. (See us about
generator systems.)
-
Why is shade a problem?
Because of the wiring design of a solar
module, all of the individual solar cells on a module must receive full
sunlight for the module to work properly. If any portion of the module is
shaded, the entire module power output-even those sections still exposed to
sunlight-is lowered.
This can be improved upon by the use of micro-inverters.
-
How many solar panels do I need to produce enough electricity
to run my house?
The array size you need depends on your
average electrical usage, climate, roof angle, shading problems and many
other factors. Not all solar systems supply 100% of your needs. Even a 50%
to 75% solar supply decreases your electric bill substantially.
-
What is net metering?
Net
metering measures the difference between the electricity you buy from your
utility and the electricity you produce with your solar energy system. Under
net metering, any excess electricity produced by your solar energy system is
delivered back into the utility grid, effectively spinning your meter
backwards. Your meter spins forward when your solar energy system is not
producing all of the electricity you are currently using. Your electric
meter keeps track of this net difference as you generate electricity and
take electricity from the utility grid.
-
Can the modules withstand high winds and hail?
The
panels are supported by UL roofer-designed mounting system that has been
tested to withstand 125 mph winds and can work on almost every type of
roofing material. The modules can withstand one inch hailstones at 50 mph.
-
What maintenance does the system require?
Because the system
has no
moving
parts you should go years without problems. You can hose off the modules one
or two times a year.
-
Do I need permission from the local utility to connect my
solar system to the grid?
Yes.
The local utility has rules and procedures that must be followed to connect
any generator to the grid safely and legally.
-
Do I need a building permit?
No. But
an electrical permit will be required. Gulf South Electric and Solar, LLC is
a multi-state licensed electrical contractor and will obtain the permit.
-
Do I need approval from my homeowners’ association?
No, its a federal law that allows anyone to
install solar panels on their roof.
-
Can I have a solar electric system on my house and still be
connected to city power?
Yes. In fact, our systems are designed as
on-grid systems, meaning they are designed to interconnect with utility
power.
-
Can I be totally independent from the utility?
Yes,
however this is impractical unless you are in a remote area inaccessible to
utility power.

Federal Tax Credit
- Has been extended till 2016 and the new FTC will take
effect January 1, 2009.
- For homes and commercial businesses it covers solar
hot water, and solar electric. Does not cover solar pool heaters.
- For both residential and commercial you get 30% back
with NO cap!
-
Here is the form for the FTC
FTC Form 5695.pdf.
State Tax Credit
(residential and apartment complexes)
- Enacted on January 1, 2008 with no expiration date!
- For residential systems and residential complexes,
i.e. apartment buildings
- Covers solar hot water, solar electric, solar pool
heaters, and wind generators.
- You get a refund of 50% from the state with a cap of
$25,000 per system. So the max you can receive back from the state is
$12,500. You can put as many systems on one home until 100% of your home’s
energy comes from solar, and still receive the state tax credit on each
system.
